Promises to Keep
This is the first novel I've read by Ann Tatlock, and I have to say I will be reading more of her books. Taking place in the 1960's, we hear Roz's story, moving with her mother away from her alcoholic father to live in the same town as her grandfather. She meets and befriends a young African-American girl who has her own family secrets. Roz grows from the innocence of youth to realization that things are not always what we want them to be, and neither are people no matter how much we believe in them.
This novel is well written and keeps your interest. It is a great coming of age book. Even though at parts you can see what may happen next, you hope that what Roz sees will be reality. I would highly recommend this to any reader.
